| Answers: The Weight Loss Fact or Myth Quiz | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. FACT- A serving of carbohydrates or protein is about as big as your fist. In contrast to most family-sized restaurant portions, your fist is a good measure of size if you don't have a scale handy. (And who ever does)? 2. MYTH- Salad is always your best choice when eating out. By the time the chef is finished cheese, croutons, and dressing, this salad could weigh in at more calories and fat than a burger! Try pasta in marinara, grilled chicken or fish, or even bringing your own favorite dressing and going light on the toppings. 3. MYTH- Carbohydrates will make you fat. Carbohydrates are your main energy source that enables you to exercise to burn fat. Just watch your portion sizes. 4. MYTH- Cardiovascular exercise is all you need to lose weight and keep it off. Nutrition and strength training are equally as important to weight loss. Nutrition ensures you have the energy to exercise and strength training builds muscle. 5. FACT- An all natural (whole foods) diet can help you lose weight. Since our bodies aren't quit sure what to do with refined sugar, hydrogenated oils, etc., they are often stored as fat. Many times this change helps our body's metabolism get back on track. 6. FACT- Weight training helps you lose fat. Weight training builds muscle (which takes more calories to function than fat) thus raising your metabolism. 7. MYTH- The best way to get rid of problem fat is to spot reduce. Spot reducing is a popular myth because we all wish it was true. Unfortunately, when you lose weight, it comes off from the whole body, not just the spot you exercise. 8. FACT- Drinking plenty of water can help you lose weight. Not only does it help you feel fuller, but it replenishes the natural hydration level of your cells and helps flush out toxins and fat. 9. FACT- Muscle weighs more than fat. Not only does muscle weigh more per cubic inch than fat, but it burns more calories, helping you keep off future fat! 10. MYTH- The less fat you eat, the more fat you will lose. It is important to eat no less than 15% and no more than 30% of your daily calories from fat. If you do not have enough fat in your diet, your body cannot properly function, thus lowering your metabolism. 11. MYTH- A low-carb diet will make you lose fat. A low-carb diet will make you quickly lose muscle and water, but most of us want to lose fat. 12. FACT- You can lose a dress size without losing weight. Fact- Since muscle weighs more than fat, it is possible to get smaller while staying the same weight or even gaining a couple of pounds. 13. MYTH- You can eat as much as you want as long as the product is fat free. If you eat too much of a fat free product, it will simply be too many calories. This is also usually simple, refined sugar which will immediately be stored as fat and leave you hungry. Try an apple! 14. MYTH- Using proper form during exercise isn't as important if your goal is weight loss. In cardio and strength training, use proper form. I can't believe how many people drape themselves over the elliptical machine or fling weights around! It doesn't benefit calorie loss to be lazy, plus it could cause an injury that will keep you from exercising. 15. FACT- A nutritious diet and exercise is the healthiest way to lose weight. No matter what any of the gimmicks say, they are NOT healthy! They don't even work! Even if they appear to help, it is usually a short term result that can upset your metabolism. Note that even if you get liposuction and maintain the same lifestyle, your body still stores the same amount of fat every year- only more localized because you now have fewer fat cells.
